Macedonia’s energy infrastructure has been neglected due to recent conflict and prolonged fighting.  It also is one of the least economically developed states within the former Yugoslavia and has experienced considerable economic and political difficulties since it formed an independent state.  Macedonia has some of the highest coal production figures in the region and good potential for hydroelectric energy.  There has been an increased sense of urgency to develop indigenous energy generation especially since Macedonia imports more than 40 percent of its electricity.

It appears that hydro is the most sought after resource for renewable energy project development.  Current energy project development possibilities are favorable toward the construction of large and small hydropower plants and rehabilitation of existing ones.  Geothermal wells are currently being used for heating greenhouses, residential houses, some commercial buildings, swimming pools and in balneology.  Solar insolation is relatively high but due to the high capital costs of photovoltaics and the need for high output generation, solar projects do not look promising in the foreseeable future.  Biomass opportunities also seem limited.  Macedonian State Energy Agency reported “not anticipating any increase beyond the current use of wood as an energy carrier.”  There is very limited information available on wind resources to make a statement on the wind potential of FYR Macedonia.  However, there is an interconnection between Greece and Macedonia, and Greece has shown interest in purchasing wind power from Macedonia.
