| International Investment in Georgian Hydro Encouraged | The Georgian government is in the middle of a big push to attract foreign investors into its rapidly-expanding hydropower sector. Mariam Valishvili, First Deputy Minister at Georgia’s Ministry of Energy, told mergermarket news service that the government is looking for international companies to enter the sector. | Georgian Hydro Growth Discussed | Georgia has the second richest hydro recourses in the world whereas only 18% of hydro resources are utilised. At present 85% of electricity is generated by HPPs and only 15% is thermal generation. HPPs generate more electricity in spring/summer and less in winter when thermal generation commonly contributes. Government objective is to move to higher hydro-resource utilisation and evolve into a major regional exporter of renewable energy.

| Report From Moscow Energy Trade Fair | Even though the effects of the global financial and economic crisis have affected the Russian construction industry significantly, interest in innovative building and energy technology was unabated at SHK MOSCOW 2009, 13th International Industrial and Technology Trade Fair for Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Refrigeration, Building Automation, Sanitation and Renewable Energies. A total of 11,300 trade visitors from the CIS and neighboring countries attended Russia’s leading event for this industry and 200 exhibitors from 19 countries showcased their products on 107,600 square feet of exhibit space.

| Small Hydro Plant Re-Energized | SMALL HES WAS OPENED IN ADIGENI THROUGH USAID SUPPORT
A small hydroelectric station (HES), which was idle for years, was launched today in the Kakhareti village (Adigeni district of Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia). The HES was rehabilitated in terms of USAID-funded program on rural energy development (grant of USAID made up $148,000).

| Georgian Biogas Digester Pilot Project | A bio-digester converts livestock waste and other organic matter into methane gas through environmentally-friendly processes. It can be used to cook, heat and produce dairy products. The conversion process also produces high-quality fertilizer in addition to methane gas. The Rural Energy Programme has installed 7 bio-digesters in different regions of Georgia, including Racha, Adjara and Adigheni. Each of the digesters cost about USD 2,500. | |
