A new member to the EU, Lithuania has passed a number of laws requiring that utilities purchase power generated from renewable energy sources at favorable rates.  The primary renewable energy resources in Lithuania are biomass and wind.  Since Lithuania is primarily a lowland country, hydro power is only 4 percent of its total generating capacity.  Nevertheless, some opportunity for small hydro power projects exists.

The overall prospects for renewable energy in Lithuania are good, with new laws in place promoting growth in renewables, and the closure of older nuclear and thermal power plants.

The situation seems to be improving further as two factors are driving the development of an offshore Baltic Sea grid -- the EU's 2020 renewable energy 20% target and the need for improving the security of Europe's electricity supply.
