Turkmenistan has large available deposits of oil and natural gas that permit existing co-generation plants to meet the electric power needs of the country. Currently, large sections of the population do not pay for their use of electricity, due to state subsidies. These conditions are not favorable to renewable energy projects successfully entering the market.
The poor environment for project development is particularly unfortunate as Turkmenistan has a very high potential for wind power. The wind potential is high on more than 40 percent of its territory, with a mid term estimate of up to 10,000 MW potentially developable, and long term prospects of over 500,000 MW. These resources may even rival Turkmenistan’s natural gas reserves.
Turkmenistan also has relatively high solar potential. The eastern and south-eastern part of Turkmenistan are the best prospects for the application of solar energy, though its use would be effective anywhere in the Republic.
